Medicine and Acute Medicine.

Interdisciplinary team working in Stroke – an update February 2019
Overview
The Hyper Acute Stroke Unit (HASU) in St James’s Hospital is an inpatient unit that treats and manages patients post acute stroke. The HASU has a nursing team including a Clinical Nurse Manager & a Stroke Clinical Nurse Specialist and the unit also has an Occupational Therapist, a Speech & Language Therapist, a Physiotherapist and a Stroke Medical team.
Mercer’s Institute for Successful Ageing proudly presents an information session for the multidisciplinary team who work with people who have had a stroke.
This event aims to:
- Enable a multidisciplinary clinical audience to develop their knowledge and understanding of the management of acute stroke
- Provide an update on local and national stroke developments including the National stroke register and programme
The learning objectives for the event are to:
- Bring professionals from the hospital and the community setting together to create a space to share experiences and consider models which support best practice principles for Stroke services.
- Gain information about the clinical pathways on the Hyper Acute Stroke Unit in SJH
- Hear updates on the National Stroke Programme and National Stroke Register
- Learn about supports provided for stroke survivors by the Irish Heart Foundation
- Understand the role of inter-disciplinary working in stroke

Biogerontology is the branch of gerontology concerned with the biological processes involved in ageing.

Home FIRsT are a Specialist Older Persons Team based in the Emergency Department, in St James’s Hospital, Dublin.
The team consists of a cANP for Older Persons, Clinical Specialist Occupational Therapist, Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist and Senior Medical Social Worker.
The team’s aim is to promote admission avoidance and facilitate the safe discharge of older people who would otherwise require hospitalisation. Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment begins in the Emergency Department with specialist nursing, functional, cognitive and social needs assessments.
Mercer’s Institute for Successful Ageing proudly presents a Home FIRsT Workshop.
This workshop aims to:
- Enable a multidisciplinary clinical audience to develop their knowledge on whole systems approach to older persons care and understanding and manage frailty syndromes in the emergency, acute and community settings
- Strengthen the links between professionals in the community and hospital working with older people and allow for continued communication pathways/networks to be developed going forward.
The learning objectives for the event are to:
- Bring professionals from the hospital and the community setting together to create a space to share experiences and consider models which support best practice principles for integrated older persons services.
- Gain information about Home FIRsT: A specialist older persons team based in the Emergency Department.
- Learn about the clinical role of each member of the interdisciplinary team in assessing and intervening with this frail older population.

Biostatistics for Healthcare Professionals Study Day May 2018
Overview
Mercer’s Institute for Successful Ageing proudly presents a one day event entitled an Introduction to Biostatistics for Healthcare Professionals. Biostatistics involves the statistical processes and methods applied to the collection, analysis, and interpretation of biological data, in particular data relating to human biology, health, and medicine.
This study day is designed to teach NCHDs, Registered Nurses, Allied Health and Social Care Professionals the basic principles of biostatistics. The purpose of the event is to give participants an introduction to the discipline, providing an overview of the main concepts of biostatistics and to develop basic critical appraisal skills to assess the quality of research evidence of publications. A 1 hour workshop will also be held for participants to discuss their own research. This study day will offer a stepping stone to attending more advanced biostatistics courses if required.

Syncope & Related Disorders International Training September 2018
Overview
This two-day international training event is led by national and international experts in syncope and related disorders. The prominent speakers and sessions have been chosen to reduce gaps in training and to address areas of increasing concern for healthcare practitioners, including: diagnostic tools and risk assessment for syncope and related disorders, atrial fibrillation and other arrhythmias, epilepsy/SUDEP, dizziness and vestibular assessment, movement disorders and more. Through clinical cases and a practical demonstration within the Falls and Syncope Unit at St James’s Hospital, participants will learn best practices in diagnoses and management of syncope and related disorders.
This course is designed for healthcare professionals with an interest in syncope and related disorders, including physicians, clinicians and other healthcare professionals in acute and community settings (e.g. emergency departments; acute medical admission units; cardiology, neurology and medical gerontology units; nursing homes; and general practices). Participants will meet with experts and gain knowledge through case studies, discussions of up-to-date research, ECG traces, and practical training sessions in the Falls and Syncope Unit at St. James’s Hospital. Participants will experience current best practice in the diagnoses and management of syncope and related disorders through multimodal teaching delivered by world experts.

Syncope and Related Disorders- One year post graduate clinical program – One Year post graduate clinical program Syncope and related disorders are responsible for up to 10% of admissions or hospital and general practice attendances. Many disciplines encounter patients with syncope and related disorders. A systematic approach to evaluation and management reduces misdiagnosis, reduces hospitalisations, reduces cost and improves quality of life and morbidity and mortality.
This one year postgraduate clinical programme is designed to provide the in-depth knowledge, skills and attributes to effectively diagnose, treat and manage syncope and related disorders in a range of clinical settings and within a syncope unit. This programme is designed specifically for healthcare professionals working in and/or with an interest in syncope, including: Cardiology, Neurology, Emergency Medicine , Geriatric Medicine and AMAU. Frailty Education Programme: Insights from TILDA – Frailty is a distinctive health state related to the ageing process, in which multiple body systems gradually lose their in-built reserve. It is fast becoming a key concept in service development planning and delivery of care for our ageing population. The Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing (TILDA) delivers a one-day Frailty Education Programme which is run in conjunction with the National Clinical Programme for Older People (NCPOP). This programme incorporates key research findings from TILDA and provides an overview of the theoretical models underpinning frailty. This training programme has been awarded Category 1 approval by the Nursing & Midwifery Board of Ireland and aims to provide healthcare professionals with an enhanced understanding of frailty and frailty assessments, thereby ensuring earlier recognition of frailty, improved healthcare management, and better health outcomes for frail older adults. Dementia Services Information and Development Centre – Established in 1998, DSIDC offers professional services in education, information, consultancy and research. The Centre responds to an important need across the public, private and voluntary sectors in providing a range of insightful educational programmes for health care professionals to improve the quality of life for people living with dementia. MISA Annual Lecture – MISA’s Annual Lecture brings renowned speakers to Dublin to discuss Ageing. In 2016, MISA and the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences at Trinity College were delighted to welcome the esteemed poet Michael Longley for an evening of poetry. Longley is renowned for the beauty of his compact, meditative lyrics which have been described as “masterpieces of lucidity.” Longley reflected on ageing and memory by reading poems by other poets and poems from his own books, including The Stairwell, winner of the 2015 Griffin International Poetry Prize, as well as new work.
