Dr Gerard Boyle
Dr Gerard Boyle is a Principal Physicist at St. James’s Hospital. His primary degree is in Electronic Engineering (NUIG). He has an MSc in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Aberdeen. His PhD research was carried out at Trinity College Dublin and St. James’s Hospital Dublin on eye tremor measurement.
Gerard has worked in a wide range of areas in medical imaging and clinical engineering. He is an Adjunct Associate Professor at TCD and a Senior Member of the IEEE. He has had a long association with Mercer’s Institute at St. James’s Hospital and is closely involved in building the engineering capacity and output at MISA.
Dr Mindaugas Norkus
Dr Mindaugas Norkus is a Research Fellow affiliated with Clinical Medicine at Trinity College Dublin and Medical Physics & Bioengineering at St. James’s Hospital. He has an undergraduate background in Electronic Engineering (B.Eng.) as well as Computer & Software Engineering (B.Sc.) from Vilnius Gediminas Technical University in Lithuania and Athlone Institute of Technology respectively. He graduated with a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from the National University of Ireland, Galway in 2012 and joined the team at Biomedical Research Lab shortly after.
In his current role, Mindaugas is working on innovation and commercialisation of technology for clinical measurement of Ocular Microtremor (OMT). His research interests include OMT, laser speckle metrology, image processing, biomedical signal processing and clinical 3D printing.

Dr Ciarán Finucane
Dr Ciarán Finucane is a Medical Physicist at Mercer’s Institute for Successful Ageing and Assistant Professor (Adjunct) in Clinical Medicine. He graduated from University College Dublin with a BE in Electronic Engineering, and an M.Sc. in Biomedical Engineering conducted at National Rehabilitation Hospital in Dún Laoghaire where he developed advanced brain computer interfaces (BCI) for disabled patients. Ciarán completed a PhD in Clinical Medicine and Neural Engineering at Trinity College Dublin with his work focused on the development of a computational models and novel biomarkers of faints and falls. From 2009-2013, Ciarán was seconded to TILDA, as lead Biomedical Engineer with responsibility for analysis and management of physiological measurement processes during Wave 1 and Wave 2 and planning/piloting of Wave 3 assessments.
Ciaran’s work is currently focussed on the application of scientific solutions to age-related issues with a particular interest in cardiovascular causes of falls and brain-ageing and the interaction between brain blood flow and neural systems. Ciarán has published and presented his work widely both nationally and internationally. Most recently he has collaborated with the FASU team in MISA and international partners to introduce novel cardiovascular risk factors for falls and cerebral perfusion measurements into the national falls and syncope unit at MISA and TILDA at TCD. This is carried out with a view to developing innovative diagnostic and therapeutic tools to assist the clinical management of older patients.

Dr Chris Soraghan
Dr Chris Soraghan is a Senior Medical Physicist/Clinical Engineer in Technologies for Older People at the Medical Physics and Bioengineering Department (MPBE) at St James’s Hospital. He completed his undergraduate degree in Electronic Engineering at NUI Maynooth, followed there by a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering, developing a multichannel optical, near-infrared brain-computer interface to enable people to communicate who have lost all voluntary motor control. Chris works on the technology aspect of the Falls Management Committee at St James’s Hospital looking to reduce falls and the impact of falls, in particular for in-patients.
Chris coordinates an annual week of design where MSc students work with clinicians at the hospital for 1 week to come up with design concepts to solve clinical problems. His research and innovation interests include: falls prevention and detection technology; design for older people; geographic health-data processing; m-Health (clinical mobile App development); biomedical signal processing; and, brain-computer interfacing.

Dr Tim Foran
Dr Tim has over 30 years work experience across a diverse range of engineering specialties including manufacturing and precision engineering, applied materials science and design, medical physics, physiological measurement and medical equipment management. He has project managed several large scale hospital medical equipping schedules in St. James’s Hospital including the MISA building.
Tim’s PhD undertaken with the School of Medicine, TCD, focussed on methods of measuring gait variability and its association with falls history and neurocardiovascular instability in older adults. He also has a Diploma in Statistics and his research interests include population studies of the determinants of gait performance in older adults (TILDA) and the digital acquisition and integration of physiological data in the healthcare environment.
